“I’m all for this hotel.”
City Council member Michael Fritz thinks a Marriott hotel is just what Grand Haven needs.
“I think it’s going to be a great addition for our downtown.”
A Zeeland based developer is planning a 128 room five story Residence Inn by Marriott on Washington Avenue. Mayor Bob Monetza is a supporter.
“We’ve been waiting a long time in this community for a viable hotel project.”
Community members who spoke at a hearing on the project are divided.
Larry Hall does not want a Marriott downtown:
“I’m not against a hotel in downtown Grand Haven, just one of this size and type. It’s a national chain.”
Judy Boyle would welcome a Marriott:
“I’m so excited when I heard we are going to have something like this.”
But parking is an unsolved problem. There are 128 rooms and only 89 parking spaces. The city requires one space for every room. Tom Welling with 6 PM Hospitality Partners says they are working on it.
“We are trying to get creative with the parking the possibility of using city parking at night.”
A final vote on zoning for the project is June 16th. Councilman Kevin McLaughlin is optimistic the parking problem will be solved.
“I just don’t want this hotel to die because of parking.”
