West Michigan distillery releases gin made from asparagus

Michigan produces more asparagus than any other state, half of the asparagus in the U.S. Now, thanks to Long Road Distillers, you can enjoy it in a new way - as a cocktail

“Long Road Asparagin as a brand-new gin that we considered to be uniquely and unapologetically Michigan.”

Long Road Distillers co-founder Kyle VanStrien says its latest limited release spirit is a tribute to the state’s farmers and the fields they cultivate, featuring asparagus grown in Mears, Michigan by Golden Stock Farms and juniper his team handpicked on Beaver Island.

“We paired it with botanicals that we were excited about; we thought made sense. So we have chives and tarragon and black pepper and then a little fresh lemon peel and we think it really contributes to a beautiful gin.”

So how to drink it?

VanStrien likes it straight.

“But I do think that it makes a great martini. We've played around with it here in a Gibson with a locally foraged pickled ramp. It was a really great cocktail with some vermouth. It's also great in a Bloody Mary.”

Asparagin will be available at Long Road Distillers tasting rooms in Grand Rapids and Grand Haven, and at retailers statewide the first week of June.
