Kent County residents can get a head start on summer with a new way to get to the beach: riding a Rapid public transit bus route looping from downtown Grand Rapids to Millenium Park.
The new service starts Friday, May 16 – a week ahead of the park’s usual summer schedule.
“Fully open this weekend: beach, concessions, boat house, splash pad, for those that want to enjoy the park.”
Ben Swayze, Director of Kent County Parks Department says the goal is to connect urban neighborhoods to natural greenspace.
“I’m hoping not only will people be using the route to get to the beach but maybe those that haven’t had the chance to explore Millennium Park in the past because of transportation issues now have a direct route as well.”
Buses run Saturdays and Sundays from 11AM to 7PM from The Rapid’s Central Station on Cesar Chavez Avenue SW to the Van Andel Beach House in Millennium Park on Maynard Avenue SW.
There are 30 stops along the way, and all buses include bike racks for people who would like to ride in the park.
“Millenium Park is one of the biggest urban natural areas in the entire country. We have 17 miles of trails to explore, tons of natural areas.”
This weekend is also the Discover Millenium Park event with free family activities throughout the park.
