Michigan State Police investigate after a Muskegon Heights police officer was shot Monday morning. Fellow officers later shot and killed the gunman

A uniformed Muskegon Heights police officer was on his way to work just before eight Monday morning when he encountered a disturbance on Baker Street.

He and a suspect exchanged gunfire and the officer was shot.

He radioed for help and described the suspect.

A few minutes later, police say that suspect was on the porch of a home on Reynolds Street where he fired at a passing vehicle before the homeowner shot and injured the suspect who returned fire before running.

Police at the first crime scene heard the gunfire on Reynolds Street and found the suspect in a nearby alley where they say he refused commands to drop the weapon, instead pointing it at one of the officers.

Both officers fired, striking the suspect who was taken to the hospital where he died.

The Muskegon Heights officer who was shot has been released from the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The officers who fired their weapons are on administrative leave as the Michigan State Police investigate.
