Muskegon Public Schools seeks sinking fund millage renewal

Muskegon Public Schools

On May 6th, Muskegon residents will decide whether to keep the public schools’ sinking fund millage rate for another decade

“The sinking fund is a fund that they voted in 10 years ago.”

Muskegon Public Schools Superintendent Matt Cortez says the sinking fund is used to modernize and update district facilities but can’t be used for general maintenance.

“The easiest way to explain it is you can use sinking fund for anything that if you take a building and turn it upside-down and it doesn’t fall out, we can use the sinking fund for it.”

To that end, Cortez says the district’s biggest project will be to replace all the windows in Muskegon High School.

If approved, the millage rate will remain at .9519 mill, or $0.95 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation from 2026-2036, netting the school district just over $750,000.

“We want to renew it for another 10 years. There is absolutely no tax increase, like the tax rate’s going to stay exactly the same.”

Cortez says voters can log onto mpsbond2020.com to view a list of all proposed, completed, and expanded projects.
