“Civil discourse is what our country is founded upon.”
Standing before a crowd in Rockford, republican state senator Mark Huizenga said he does not agree with everything President Donald Trump is doing or the way he is doing it.
“I don’t necessarily like the approach he is taking now but I’m not the president and you know frankly I don’t have his phone number.”
But when democrats in the State Senate approved a resolution opposing Trump administration efforts to end diversity, equity and inclusion programs Huizenga joined all the other senate republicans and voted "no."
“Why did you vote against DEI?"
“That’s a good question. The resolution that was brought to our desk, we had less than 30 seconds to look at it before we could choose and so I didn’t have a chance to read the resolution.”
Republican Huizenga defeated democrat David LaGrand by fewer than 400 votes to win the 30th district senate seat in 2022. He says he is committed to representing everyone in the district, republicans and democrats.
“I will continue to work to represent all of the people I have in my district. I will continue to work across the aisle continue to work with our governor to get things done for the state of Michigan and the people I represent."
