Facing pressure, many communities and organizations are backing away from diversity, equity and Inclusion pledges and programs

“We have been asked to reaffirm by the Human Relations commission”

Grand Haven mayor Bob Monetza says the city’s diversity, equity and inclusion statement is the same as it was when it was adopted in 2019.

“Nothing really has changed we are responding to a request from the Human Relations commission they asked us to publicly reaffirm this.”

“The City of Grand Haven respects, values and celebrates the unique attributes characteristics and perspectives that make people who they are.”

Grand Haven Clerk Maria Boersma is reading the statement straight from the city website.

“Equity, diversity and inclusion are vital to a vibrant community.”

Council member Karen Lowe questions the need to reaffirm the policy.

“Do we have to reaffirm all of our resolutions? Are they just as strong when we made them? We made that resolution, and we stand by it.”

But council member Michael Fritz sees the value in repetition.

“Sometimes if we say things its a good thing to do, I don’t mind reaffirming it.”

“The city has no specific program behind this statement. DEI programs may or may not have flaws which can be corrected or adjusted. It’s a statement of values. The city recognizes the merit and worth of every individual in this community.”
