Citing what it calls the dismantling of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs and safety concerns, organizers of a West Michigan Latino Festival have cancelled this year’s event

On social media, nonprofit Latinos Working for the Future announced it’s cancelling the annual Muskegon County Latino Festival.

Board President Angelita Valdez wrote, “The decision comes after careful consideration of several challenging factors, including the dismantling of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, heightened safety concerns, and a significant reduction in DEI funding.”

Valdez wrote that DEI initiatives are essential for ensuring that cultural events like this remain both inclusive and sustainable.

Concerns about the safety and well-being of attendees, performers and volunteers also played a role in the decision, citing ongoing challenges surrounding public safety at large gatherings.

Valdez also cited DEI funding reductions impacting the event’s quality.

Festival planners intend to bring it back in 2026.
