“Important to get it done and cleaned up”
Grand Haven mayor Bob Monetza and the city council are appropriating $673,000 to have the remaining coal removed from Harbor Island.
“This is scraping up what’s left and hauling it to a landfill elsewhere in the state correct.”
An unknown amount of land fill tipping fees will add to the expense of the coal removal and disposal.
“This is the cost of getting this material removed hauled away and disposed. This does not include the tipping fees that will have to be paid correct.”
The contractor expects to have the remaining coal on the island removed by the end of this spring.
“This is one piece of the puzzle for Harbor Island, but it is an important one.”
There are other contaminants on the site of the old power plant, including PFAS in the groundwater. Getting all the pollution removed or contained and making the island available for recreation or redevelopment is a long-term project.
“Glad to see progress made we are going to be years and years cleaning up harbor island, but this is a step.”
