The Grand Rapids City Commission voted to authorize $128 million in capital improvement bonds funding construction of the downtown amphitheater and soccer stadium.
At the Fiscal Committee Hearing, Commissioner Drew Robbins reiterated how the payment structure will work.
“While the city is issuing the bonds, we are not the ones that are paying for them out of our own money and that the debt service is coming from the Kent County Lodging Excise tax fund.”
The proposal asks for a 30-year bond worth $100.5 million to help finance construction on Amway Stadium.
Construction is expected to begin on the 8,500-seat venue this spring.
The project is headed by development group Grand Action 2.0 which sets the cost at $175 million -- $115 million from public sources and $60 million from private donations.
Commissioners have also approved a proposal for a $27.5 million bond for the $184 million Acrisure Amphitheater project.
The 12,000-seat performance venue on Market Avenue is expected to be completed in May 2026 and will include a public park.
