Out On The Lakeshore is a 10-year-old grassroots movement dedicated to creating a more inclusive Holland community, over the years evolving into a vital hub for LGBTQ+ support, activism, and empowerment.

Holland Museum’s Executive Director Michelle Stempien says the exhibit highlights the group’s work and history, including the 2020 passage of Holland’s nondiscrimination ordinance.

“What we’re really hoping is that visitors will gain a deeper understanding of how Out On The Lakeshore has influenced LGBTQ+ rights and visibility in Holland and ultimately creating a more inclusive and welcoming community.”

The exhibit includes items from the group’s beginnings such as a bench dedicated to founding members and one of its first pride flags.

“So far we’ve been getting a lot of positive feedback about the exhibition.”

Waves of Pride: The Impact of Out On The Lakeshore is part of the museum’s Cultural Lens series open now through June 30th.
