State and local representatives gathered in Grand Rapids to announce a $25 million federal grant secured for the replacement of the East Beltline bridge that crosses over I-96

“This investment is a game-changer for Grand Rapids to ensure that our infrastructure is safer, more accessible, and that it’s built to last.”

Grand Rapids Congresswoman Hillary Scholten joined State Senators Mark Huizenga and Winnie Brinks, as well as Grand Rapids City Engineer Tim Burkman and MDOT Director Brad Wieferich for the announcement.

The East Beltline overpass was built in 1961 and is used by over 50,000 vehicles a day. MDOT says the bridge has served the region well but is beyond repair and must be replaced.

“This funding will expand vehicle lanes to ease congestion, add ADA-compliant pedestrian walkways, and build dedicated bicycle infrastructure to ensure that everyone – drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians – can safely travel, and efficiently.”

Funding was secured through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which Scholten says is currently at risk due to disbursement freezes from the Trump administration, jeopardizing critical infrastructure projects across the country.

“This bridge replacement is proof that when we invest in infrastructure, we invest in people, in jobs, and in our economy.”

The project is expected to begin in March 2027 and completed by Thanksgiving, during which time the bridge will be completely closed.
