The City of Grand Rapids’ Community Development Committee has scheduled a public hearing Tuesday, February 11th at Grand Rapids City Hall at 2 p.m. in council chambers.
Four redevelopment projects will be discussed, three of which are requesting Brownfield Plan Amendments, a financially based incentive that helps turn contaminated or neglected buildings into new residential or business sites.
One of those, M-Village, is a $7.8 million affordable housing redevelopment in the 1800 block of Eastern Avenue SE and the 700 block of Elliot Street SE. City Economic Director Sarah Rainero explains:
“This is a pretty exciting one for a couple of different reasons but, overall, this is Messiah Baptist Church taking on the development to add 70 new residential units, with the first phase really being dedicated to 10 duplexes, so 20 units overall.”
Construction of the $9.3 million West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Headquarters in the 1100 block of Godfrey Avenue SW also seeks a Brownfield Amendment.
“There are a few different buildings on this site and so one of those buildings will be demolished.”
Other projects include the 200-acre industrial Walkerview Development and a nearly $740,000 project in the 1000 block of Wealthy Street SE to renovate a vacant, dilapidated building into commercial space and four residential apartments.
