The Hope College community is grieving the loss of a well-known student who died this weekend after being hit by a train in Holland

Hope College president Matt Scogin shared the news via social media: 20-year-old student Jennifer Kasunick was struck by a train Saturday evening and did not survive.

Holland police say the accident happened at 10th Street near Lincoln Avenue.

Their investigation shows Kasunick, who was blind, was walking on the sidewalk and stopped when the train signals activated, but she was too close and got clipped by the train as it passed.

She was with her service dog, Rowdy, who survived.

The junior from Bay Village, Ohio was well known on campus where she was a resident advisor and a violinist in the orchestra.

Hope College is making counseling services available for students and staff struggling to deal with the tragedy.
