Sen. Debbie Stabenown (left) and Rep. Dan Kildee (right) at Hemlock Semiconductor in October, 2024 to mark the receipt of up to $325 million in proposed direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act

A mid-Michigan semiconductor manufacturer has officially been awarded $325 million from the U.S. Department of Commerce to boost production

The funds come from the Biden Administration's CHIPS act, meant to build and expand semiconductor facilities across the U.S.

Hemlock Semiconductor, based in Saginaw County, is the only U.S. owned manufacturer of hyper-pure polysilicon, the bedrock of semiconductors.

They plan to use the funds to support the construction of a new manufacturing facility.

Michigan U-S Senator Elissa Slotkin said the award will allow thousands of mid-Michigan workers to access the middle class.

The project is expected to create nearly 180 manufacturing jobs and over 1,000 construction jobs over time.

Along with other Congressional lawmakers, Slotkin says the investment will protect Michigan's auto industry and strengthen the domestic supply chain.
