“You just want to get rid of all the eyesores in Muskegon we would like to see blight redeveloped then unfortunately it may have to come down.”
And Muskegon mayor Ken Johnson says it is disappointing the former bank at 880 first street is the next blighted building scheduled for demolition because there was a plan to redevelop the structure into apartments,
“It’s a little bittersweet seeing this come down because we had long hoped to see it get redeveloped but unfortunately it didn’t pan out.”
And in its current condition…a five story frame of steel and concrete, city manager Jonathan Seyferth say citizens want it gone.
“This is one of the most common questions I get out and about town.”
Next step is removal of the remaining asbestos on the site.
“Which is currently contained and is only pose a public safety if it was disturbed so needs to be resolved before we do final demolition.”
City leaders say the demolition should be completed early next year.
“We hear earfuls from folks when are you going to take care of that building downtown, so we are going to get her done.”
