Grand Rapids hospital expands services out-of-state to reach more patients

Vandalia Health/Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation

West Michigan’s Mary Free Bed Hospital continues growing its national footprint. Its expanding rehabilitation services partnering with a West Virginia hospital

A joint operating agreement between Mary Free Bed and Vandalia Health begins January 1, 2025, expanding rehabilitation services for patients throughout West Virginia.

The two organizations will work together building a new 50-bed rehabilitation hospital on Vandalia Health’s campus in Charleston, West Virginia.

Mary Free Bed’s leadership team will manage day-to-day operations, performance, processes and procedures.

This new partnership will help grow access to high quality rehabilitation services in West Virginia, aligning practices and increasing clinical skills to better serve more complex patients.

Despite the geographical distance between the two organizations, leaders say their mission and values are closely intertwined.

Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation started with a single hospital bed in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1891 and has grown to a rehabilitation system with more than 2,300 staff at more than 60 locations in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Virginia.
