A new study has identified several quality-of-life gaps among women and children in Michigan. The 2024 Health of Women and Children Report analyzed nationwide health care trends

When it comes to having more than one chronic condition, Michigan's women ranked in the bottom 10 states. They received a similar ranking for excessive drinking.

The state also ranks among the worst 15 states in terms of women and children in poverty.

Leanne Espinoza is with the L-M-A-S District Health Department, which serves the Eastern U-P.

She says policy solutions, like Flint's plan to give cash payments to new mothers, can help alleviate negative outcomes.

"That help can negate some of those adverse childhood experiences. Because that mom then has a little bit of a foundation, a little bit of a cushion to say, ok, I can get through this time, and we can move forward as a stable family."

The state is in the top 10 in terms of women and children with health insurance.
