Former lakeshore congressman Pete Hoekstra represented Michigan’s 2nd District in Washington for nearly 20 years, where he was also Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.
Hoekstra served four years as Ambassador to the Netherlands in Trump’s first term and supported his 2024 presidential campaign in Michigan as chairman of the state’s Republican Party, a position he took over through a court ruling amid party turmoil.
He previously ran unsuccessful campaigns for Michigan governor and U.S. Senator.
In his announcement, Trump praised his own overhaul of the North American Free Trade Agreement for leveling the playing field for farmers and working families.
He noted, “Pete will help me once again put America first.”
The U.S. Senate must confirm the nomination before Hoekstra can take the position.
