Canadian officials have been planning for years to bury 50-thousand tons of nuclear waste underneath the Great Lakes Basin.

"Democratic Representative Dan Kildee of Flint says the Canadian Government plans to store high-level nuclear waste in Ontario.

These potential sites would be roughly 155 miles north of Lake Superior and around 25 miles east of Lake Huron, according to Canadian officials.

Kildee says Canada's plan poses a threat to the Great Lakes.

"If there is some sort of an event that would compromise this nuclear waste storage facility, let's just make sure we're going to limit the potential damage by not putting it right next door to this freshwater source."

Lawmakers hope to add an amendment to the defense budget formally opposing the plan.

A spokesperson for Canada's Nuclear Waste Management Organization said their scientists have determined there is no risk to the Great Lakes.

They say US Lawmakers are engaged in "inaccurate portrayals."
