Driver hits fire dept. vehicle on US 131

Grand Rapids Fire Department

A suspected drunk driver crashed into a Grand Rapids Fire Department vehicle stopped at an accident scene on 131. The incident highlights the dangers for first responders

Fire officials say early Tuesday morning, a Grand Rapids Fire Department blocker vehicle was providing safety support at the scene of a car crash on southbound US 131.

A driver suspected of being impaired crashed an SUV into the fire department utility vehicle, destroying it’s trailer which is used to absorb impact and protect firefighters and expensive equipment during highway operations.

No one was injured.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by first responders and the critical importance of driver awareness in accident zones.

Fire Chief Brad Brown said it also underscores the importance of Michigan's Move Over Law, which requires drivers to slow down and move over for stopped emergency and maintenance vehicles.
