Officials with the U.S. Department of Justice are in Grand Rapids and Kent County to monitor compliance with federal voting rights laws, according to a release from U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Mark Totten.
The Justice Department’s Election Day Program hopes to ensure public confidence in the electoral process by providing local points of contact for the public to report possible federal election law violations.
Those efforts are led by Assistant United States Attorney Austin Hakes, who serves as the District Election Officer for West Michigan, overseeing the handling of Election Day complaints of voting concerns, threats of violence to election officials or staff, and election fraud.
The Justice Department regularly employs staff to monitor compliance with federal civil rights laws in elections throughout the country. Monitors include Justice Department personnel who will contact local and state election officials as needed throughout Election Day.
Complaints about possible violations can be made online or by calling 800-253-3931
