Democratic U.S. Representative Hillary Scholten held a sizeable lead most of the evening over her opponent, Paul Hudson

The incumbent Scholten faced East Grand Rapids attorney Paul Hudson to maintain Democratic control of Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District seat. That seat includes Grand Rapids as well as portions of Kent, Muskegon and Ottawa counties.

Scholten is a former immigration attorney who won the seat in 2022, making her the first Democrat to represent Grand Rapids in Congress since 1977.

Scholten spoke about what she hopes to accomplish over the next two years.

“We’re looking to do more of the same, right? I mean, so many of these places that we have been visiting have not had a Congressional visit in decades. When I have spent so much time out in Muskegon Heights and every time we’ve showed up, they’ve just said, ‘We’ve never had a member of Congress pay this much attention to us and our issues. Being a representative means speaking for all people, all areas of your district and we’re just getting started.”
