The vote count going into Tuesday night showed David LaGrand with a strong lead, beating out his opponent, Third Ward City Commissioner Senita Lenear.
LaGrand is an attorney who has served as a state representative, city commissioner, and assistant Kent County prosecutor.
During a debate last month between himself and Lenear, LaGrand said his priorities included public safety and justice, as well as developing the local economy and helping Grand Rapids’ unhoused population. He’s also focused on the city’s lack of affordable housing and improving its environmental sustainability efforts.
Current Mayor Rosalynn Bliss, who endorsed LaGrand, is being termed out at the end of the year.
