Democrat David LaGrand advances to March’s special election for the state's 75th District House of Representatives seat.
LaGrand received 81 percent of the vote against fellow Democrat Michael Scruggs.
A current Grand Rapids Public School District board member, LaGrand says education and the environment are among priorities if elected.
"I’m also very passionate about social justice issues – in particular reforming our criminal justice system," he says. "So that we can keep our communities more effectively safe, and give victims stronger voices. But at the same time cut costs."
LaGrand faces Republican Blake Edmonds in the March 2016 election.
The 75th district seat became vacant in August after Brandon Dillon stepped down to become chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party.
