The lawsuit challenges absentee ballot rules

The state of Michigan has asked a judge to sanction the Michigan Republican Party and the Republican National Committee for what it’s calling a “frivolous” challenge to absentee ballot rules.

The GOP lawsuit says official guidance from Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson allows people who have never lived in Michigan to qualify for absentee ballots.

Benson says the guidance applies to people like family members and dependents of Michigan military personnel stationed overseas. She says the state’s guidance is based on Michigan and federal voting laws.
