The event, titled Great Lakes State Election Security: A Bipartisan Town Hall on Michigan Elections will feature panelists like former members of Congress, Republican Fred Upton and Democrat Mark Schauer, as well as Kent County Clerk, Republican Lisa Posthumus Lyons and Michigan Secretary of State, Democrat Jocelyn Benson, who spoke with WGVU on what attendees can expect.
“I’m looking forward to being a part of a discussion that highlights just how much we’re doing at the state and local level to make it easier to vote and harder to cheat in our state.”
The panel hopes to engage citizens to deepen their understanding of how elections are run in the state, build confidence in these processes, and provide them with information to share with their neighbors, peers, and constituents.
Benson says in an era of misinformation, public forums like this are more important than ever.
“So, in that moment, it’s required us to do more than ever before to educate folks about our elections and really make sure that they have as much expertise as we do, if possible, so that they can have rightly-placed faith in our elections.”
The town hall meeting is open to the public and starts at 7 p.m. at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.
