The two candidates vying for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat went head-to-head Tuesday for an hourlong debate carried nationwide

Republican Former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers and Democrat U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin met in Grand Rapids Tuesday evening for a televised debate at WOOD TV.

The candidates hope to replace retiring Senator Debbie Stabenow.

The two answered questions on the war in Gaza, reproductive rights, energy issues, social programs and bringing down the high cost of living.

Slotkin: “Number one is bringing supply chains back home from places like China. That includes the 44 manufacturing facilities that are being built right now in Michigan. You need a good job with good benefits. Number two is attacking the primary costs that are burning a hole in people’s pockets: healthcare, prescription drugs.”

Rogers: “To help the middle class you don’t do it by raising prices. You don’t do it by absolutely reckless spending in Washington DC. Since my opponent has been elected, we have lost in this state 29,000 manufacturing jobs. I worked in an assembly plant in Michigan. These jobs are critical.”

Absentee voting is already underway in Michigan, ahead of the election November 5.
