As the election heats up, some Michigan voters are looking to vote by mail. But some groups are sending out absentee ballot applications to voters unprompted

Political groups and nonprofit organizations are known to send out mailers with Michigan's Absentee ballot application, a process that is legal under state law.

According to the Secretary of State's office, clerks must validate that any signatures from those 3rd mailers match existing signatures on file.

Minde Lux is the Isabella County Clerk. She says while some of these applications may be legit, voters can always apply for absentee ballots through the state:

"If you have any inkling that there's something wrong, then go to the real source, you know, go to the Michigan dot gov, forward slash vote and do everything there. And that way, you know, you're going to a viable, reliable site."

State law says that it is illegal to ask for payment to register to vote.
