“Will the sky fall if you don’t pick a person? No.”
The sky may not fall but Grand Haven clerk Maria Boersma is not sure what will happen if the city council can’t agree on filing a vacancy.
“Because it usually does not happen. the governor’s office could possibly get involved.”
There is a vacancy on city council after Ryan Cummins resigned to become Saugatuck city manager. There are two finalists. council members Kevin McLaughlin and Karen Lowe support lawyer Erin Lyon, wner of Kenzie B’s Café.
“Her qualifications are absolutely amazing.”
Councilman Michael Fritz and mayor Bob Monetza prefer Mike Dora, who was appointed once before to fill a council vacancy,
‘I voted for him because I think he is best prepared to step into the role at this point in time.”
After three ballots council was still deadlocked two votes for each candidate, they are approaching the 30-day deadline to fill the vacancy.
“It is better to have an odd numbered council versus and even numbered council for the exact reason we are deadlocked right now.”
Next week council will meet again and try to fill the vacant seat.
“I would propose we recess until next Wednesday same time.”
