“We have received a request from Messiah Missionary Baptist church that is located at the southwest corner of Henry and Logan to commemoratively designate that intersection as Cliff’s Corner.”
Grand Rapids city engineer Tim Burkman says Cliff’s Corner would honor the memory of Dr. Clifton Rhodes Junior, the longtime pastor at Messiah Missionary Baptist Church.
“Pastor of that congregation for over 45 years prior to passing away in 2018.”
Rhodes was 74 when died on April 16, 2018, from ALS disease. City Commissioner Lisa Knight supports renaming the corner in his memory.
“There were five churches in this community everybody went to and that was one of them, so I am grateful this is happening.”
A public hearing on the name change is scheduled for next month.
“It is great to see this. He was a bright light in our community.”
