A student group says remote instruction is a poor substitute for in person teaching and the board should raise salaries to attract and keep faculty

The Grand Rapids Public Schools Board of Education is approving a 2.3-million-dollar contract with Elevate K-12, a Chicago based virtual teaching company.

But before they voted to renew the contract with Elevate K-12 at Mondays board meeting, members heard objections from a student group, who say remote instruction is a poor substitute for in person teaching, and the board should raise salaries to attract and keep faculty.

“We demand that this district invest in our teachers we demand that this district invest in our classrooms, and we demand that this district invest in us because we are the prospects for the future we are the leaders of tomorrow.”

A spokesman says GRPS has 185 unfilled teacher positions. Leaders of the Grand Rapids Teachers union says salaries in the district are below the Kent County average.
