MDOT is investing approximately $17 million to rebuild four and a half miles of I-196 business loop, most of which is made up of its original pavement from the 1960’s.
Starting Saturday, April 13th, eastbound I-196 business loop from US-31 to 88th Avenue will close until August. Once that’s complete, westbound will be closed from August until late November. Traffic during the entire seven-month project will be detoured to the 16th Street or Adam Street exits off I-196 in Holland.
MDOT says they hope to make accommodations for the influx of traffic into Holland for Tulip Time in May, and businesses along the route should still be accessible.
Work will include asphalt resurfacing, full-depth concrete joint repairs, new signs, traffic signal work and new guardrails. They say it’s a long-term investment for the service life of the corridor, which sees about 25,000 drivers a day, and is expected to support 241 jobs.
