Expungement clinic could give those with a criminal conviction a fresh start

A Michigan expungement law has helped clear over a million misdemeanor and felony convictions since taking effect. That's according to a new report from the group—Safe and Just Michigan.

The clean slate law expanded eligibility for expungement and set a process for the automatic scrubbing of certain convictions from public records.

John Cooper is executive director of Safe and Just Michigan. He says criminal history isn’t a good way of telling whether someone is a threat to society.

“You know, the research shows that after 3-4 years, a person who has gotten into trouble is no more likely than a member of the general public to get in trouble. So, we shouldn’t treat them any different. And that’s why we’re starting to seal these records.”

Supporters say lawmakers need to do more to remove barriers preventing automatic expungement.
