“Normally citizens get a chance to come and, when there’s an item or a general comment period, have three minutes to speak uninterrupted, but this is an opportunity to engage outside the official meeting.”
Grand Rapids’ City Manager Mark Washington says that’s what City Commission Night Out is all about: bringing the officials out into the community discussing at length the topics that are important to residents.
“This allows residents to have a real human connection with elected officials and staff and really have an opportunity to have a conversation.”
Planning and development officials will also be available to discuss new zoning proposals and how they will impact the city. Following the event, the Commission will hold its regular meeting.
“Prior to the meeting, if there are questions, there’ll be opportunities for people to engage and interact in a more deliberative dialogue which cannot happen during an official public hearing.”
For those interested in speaking with additional departments, tables with representatives and resources for 25 city offices will also be available.
The City Commission Night Out will take place at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Harrison Park Academy. This is the first of three planned Night Outs for the year.
