GRPS is holding a series of free FAFSA workshops from now through the month of March. They hope to help students and their parents navigate the recently revamped process for applying for federal student aid.
In late December, The U.S. Department of Education made changes in how to apply for aid, hoping to streamline the process. However, many users have run into technical issues with the government website, leading to confusion. Under Secretary for the U.S. Department of Education James Kvaal says those issues have been resolved.
“The application is now up and running 24-hours a day and we’re just going to keep working closely with colleges, with counselors and other people who are helping students on this journey because it is different than it was in the past. It’s better, but it’s a change.”
Annually, more than 17 million students file for some form of federal student aid to help cover the cost of higher education. FAFSA serves as an essential tool in helping to alleviate that financial burden for themselves and their families. Kvaal explains the importance of applying.
“Anyone who’s filled out the FAFSA knows it’s not the highlight of your day, but more importantly it’s going to help us get aid into hands of low income students who need it.”
