GRPS holds first in-person forum tonight

Grand Rapids Public Schools will host a public feedback session tonight concerning their 2024 strategic plan.

The public can have their voice heard at one of several in-person feedback sessions starting tonight.

GRPS is proposing a number of strategic moves in order to better serve their students and community, including the closure of several buildings.

Some recommendations include the relocation of students from East Leonard Elementary to either Coit Creative Arts Academy or Kent Hills Elementary. Another option would see the transfer of students from Stocking Elementary to either Sibley Elementary or Harrison Park Academy. These consolidations are expected to save the school district $63 million dollars in outstanding maintenance and repairs to older facilities.

Other proposals include turning Ken-O-Shay Elementary along Plaster Creek into an environmental science academy, as well as providing all academic buildings with air conditioning by 2029.

District leaders say all of these recommendations are only at the proposal stage right now, and there will be three more public forums throughout December, held in various parts of the district. Voting on the proposals by the school board will take place in mid-December.

Tonight’s meeting is at the City High Middle School Auditorium at 6:30 and all meetings will have daycare and translators available.

A complete rundown of the district’s proposals as well as a schedule of future forums can be found at GRPS.org
