Jacob Bonnema, member the Ottawa County, Mich., Board of Commissioners, speaks during a meeting, Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2023, in West Olive, Mich.

Instead of using their paid Ottawa County attorney, the board is hiring a separate lawyer to represent commissioner Bonnema during a hearing this week. It’s part of their stalemate with health officer Adeline Hambley

The question is, after closed door negotiations November 6th did the Ottawa County Board offer Health Officer Adeline Hambley four million dollars to resign.

“I’ve been called to testify”

Commissioner Jacob Bonnema is one of 4 commissioners called to testify at a hearing into the alleged 4-million-dollar deal. County attorney David Kalman says there was no firm offer, but that’s not what Commissioner Bonnema says he remembers.

“I can say there is definitely a conflict of interest in how he is characterizing the facts.”

The board will pay an outside attorney to represent Bonnema.

Commissioner Gretchen Cosby

“The 4 people who are subpoenaed are going to be, all but one, represented by Kalman Legal? Correct.”

And Sylvia Rhodea

“I am rather conflicted on this because I think it is quite unusual.”

“I need to be confident my interests are being protected.”

The new conservative majority on the board tried to fire Health Officer Hambley when they took control last year, but Hambley filed a wrongful termination suit. If the Friday hearing happens as scheduled, a judge may decide if Hambley has 4 million dollar deal.
