Officials told the Board of Education the security effort includes a 24-hour weapons detection system, increasing the use of dogs that can sniff-out firearms, and equipping all staff and students from sixth grade to high school seniors with ID badges.
District officials also say the security plan allows for creating so-called “geo-fencing” that sends an alert if a student leaves a campus without authorization.
Oxford Community schools and some officials have faced several lawsuits that alleged they did too little to keep the high school safe, before and during the shootings in November, 2021 that took the lives of four students and wounded seven other people.
Critics counter that creating new response plans and installing silent alarms does not address the need for more mental health counseling to help those traumatized by the Oxford High massacre.
