City will receive $6 million towards downtown revitalization as are leaders dream big of what the Heights could be in ten years

After learning it would receive $6 million towards revitalizing its downtown corridor, Muskegon Heights’ state house representative hosted a second listening session Monday with area residents.

The public infrastructure grant is part of the recently passed state budget for next year—and will help fund structural improvements along Broadway Avenue in downtown Muskegon Heights, as well as upgrades to Peck Street and Rowan Park.

City leaders say the goal is to return downtown Muskegon Heights back to its once former glory decades ago, when Broadway Avenue was a thriving Lakeshore shopping destination, filled with restaurants and the historic Strand Theater, which has sat in the dark for the past thirty years.

To get there, Muskegon Height’s newly elected state representative, Democrat Will Snyder, is hosting a series of listening sessions to get an idea of the issues that are most important to area residents.

An important and necessary challenge, Snyder says, will be revitalizing Muskegon Heights from within, while avoiding gentrification.

Snyder won election in November 2022 to the state House 87th District after his former Boss, Terry Sabo, stepped down due to term limits.
