Distracted driving legislation could see a redo at a vote in the Michigan House this week

The bills would ban most hands-on phone use while behind the wheel.

Last week, the package didn’t get enough support to go through with a planned vote.

Democratic Representative Emily Dievendorf was among the holdouts.

They say they want to see other policies to make sure police wouldn’t misuse a new reason to stop someone.

“I would like to really safeguard against disparate application especially impacting our Black and our Brown communities in all bills that allow for more punitive responses.”

Package sponsors say the hands-free bills would save lives.

They say talks on addressing concerns surrounding penalties in the bills are ongoing.
