Michigan lawmakers are renewing their effort to ban hands-on phone use while driving

Michigan law currently bans texting while behind the wheel, but largely falls short of outlawing other types of phone use.

Alexa Kiefer’s family has been pushing for that to change since losing her brother to a distracted driver in 2016. She spoke to lawmakers during the hearing.

“You guys all remember him as a victim and not really the person he truly was. And I’m just tired of being a victim, I’m tired of remembering my brother as a victim. He was so much more than that so let’s get this done.”

Similar legislation has come up in previous years but stalled each time.
