The student union at Michigan State University reopened Monday, nearly two months after an on-campus mass shooting

The MSU union was one of two locations where a gunman opened fire on February 13. Three students were killed and five were wounded in the attack. Its reopening comes amid new university-wide safety measures, including requiring a key card to enter after 6 p.m.

A room on the third floor hosts a memorial to honor the victims of the shooting.

Kat Cooper is the chief communications officer for student life at MSU. She says the university understands if community members aren’t ready to come back to the Union.

“I think there's going to be different reactions, as people come into the building, you might think you're ready, and you walk in and you turn around and walk right back out and say, No, I'm not, I'm not mentally and emotionally there yet.”

Berkey Hall, the other building where the shooting took place, will remain closed for the rest of this year.
