Emergency meeting Monday fails to find an interim City Manager after firing of Troy Bell

As the city grapples with several vacant leadership positions, the Muskegon Heights City Council Monday called an emergency meeting to discuss next steps.

The termination of Muskegon Heights City Manager Troy Bell last month has left area residents with a City Hall in peril.

After a divided city council voted to end Bell’s contract effective January 31st, Mayor Walter Watt called two separate meetings to discuss plans to replace him, however, both meetings were cancelled because not enough council members showed up.

Resident’s frustrations grew even further Monday evening, after the City Council had met to vote on a handful of interim city manager candidates, when only 1 out of the 6 showed up to the meeting for an interview.

The city council then decided to postpone the meeting, leaving City Hall in a state of limbo.

Currently, Muskegon Heights is not only without a city manager, but also a city attorney, a finance manager, or a human resources department.

The council approved Muskegon Heights Police Chief Maurice Sain to act as City Manager for a week until the next meeting on February 13th.
