Michigan Congressman Dan Kildee is re-introducing legislation to restore pension benefits for automotive workers who were laid off during the 2008 Great Recession. In some cases, workers lost as much as 70% of their benefits

For the past 14 years, former salaried employees of Delphi Automotive have been fighting to get their benefits restored.

Previous efforts made it all the way to the US Supreme Court, but were unsuccessful.

Last year, Kildee’s bill to restore the benefits passed the House, but never made it out the Senate.

Kildee says the approach to get the bill passed will be a little different this time around. He says educating Senators will be crucial because there’s a lot of misunderstandings about the case.

"It's not the product of mismanagement by the pension trustees, it's the product of the federal government decision, the federal government owns the problem, and the federal government is responsible for fixing it."

More than 5,000 former Delphi Automotive retirees in Michigan could be affected by the legislation.
