Recreational marijuana dispensary opens doors to Muskegon customers as 'prohibition' comes to an end

Dozens of people stood in line Friday morning for the chance to legally buy recreational marijuana for the first time in Muskegon. Park Place Provisionary, a locally-owned, family-operated marijuana dispensary in Muskegon officially opened its doors for recreational sales Friday morning, as the store's first customer, Muskegon City Commissioner Ken Johnson says, it’s the beginning of a new era in West Michigan.

“Not only is it the end of prohibition in Muskegon which has disproportionately affected people of color…it also creates new business ventures as well,” Johnson said.

The dispensary, the area’s first medical marijuana store, now becomes Muskegon’s first recreational dispensary as well, as anyone over 21 with a valid ID can walk in, legally purchase marijuana, and walk out. A new day for marijuana smokers, as owner Greg Maki says, it’s been a long journey to get to this point.

“Very exciting,” Maki said. “We didn’t know how busy we would be…we knew we weren’t going to be as big as Ann Arbor, but still very exciting.”

Ann Arbor opened its first recreational dispensary back on December 1st, as the store ran out of product within 2 days. Maki said his store in Muskegon is well stocked and will not sell out.
