Amway Grand Plaza to undergo $40 million facelift

Officials have unveiled plans for a renovation of the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids that promises to dramatically transform the city’s downtown skyline. The $40 million facelift will overhaul the Amway Grand Plaza’s glass tower that sits atop the landmark hotel in downtown grand rapids. Amway President Dick DeVos issued this statement:

“Renovating the hotel tower…will help cement Grand Rapids as a world class destination for visitors, residents and businesses from around the world for years to come.”

Rockford Construction will serve as the construction manager for the project.

“We are extremely excited to do this project, it shows a long history with this client and our relationship that we really appreciate,” Rockford Construction President Shane Napper said. “We also love to do projects with beauty and soul, which this project encompasses so we are looking forward to do that, and we also look forward to working on one of the most iconic buildings in downtown Grand Rapids.”

Officials say the makeover will focus mostly on the glass exterior of the building, installing a lighter more modern glass that will make the building more energy efficient, reflective of light to viewers on the street, and provide guests with floor to ceiling glass views of the city.

Napper says the project is another example of the resurgence and reimagining of the downtown corridor, and more is yet to come.

“I couldn’t be more excited about living and working in Grand Rapids," he said. "I really see a continued transformation in the next 10 years. And some of the additional projects that that project will bring.”

Hotel operations will continue during the process. Construction is scheduled for completion April 2021.
