The demolition portion of the $2.7 million Grand Haven South Pier overhaul project in western Michigan is underway.

The Grand Haven Tribune and The Muskegon Chronicle report the work started this week, blocking pedestrian access by the public until next summer at the Lake Michigan pier.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says that workers this fall will chip away at the concrete center section of the pier, looking for indications of structural damage beneath.

In the spring, the work will largely shift to repairs.

The aim is to complete the work by next July.

Demolition comes a little more than a month after the pier was stripped of its catwalk. Efforts are taking place to raise $1.5 million to reinstall the catwalk.
