Holland City Council member Nancy DeBoer is now the city’s mayor-elect.
She’s also the city’s first female mayor.
DeBoer received 52 percent of the vote against fellow council member and current Mayor Bob VandeVusse.
She says civic engagement is a passion she hopes to encourage in her new position.
"I really hope that we can continue to grow the number of voices involved in handling the issues that come up in the city," DeBoer says. "And growing the number of people that are involved in working through whatever it is we’re tackling, as a group."
DeBoer says one such project is the city’s civic center.
She says various stakeholder meetings begin later this month with several chances for public comment and engagement by the beginning of 2016.
As Mayor Pro-Tem, VandeVusse took on the mayoral role earlier this summer after former mayor Kurt Dykstra stepped down for an out-of-state job opportunity.
