City of Grand Rapids is also considering other improvements

Possible changes under consideration in the Calder Plaza included improved wheelchair accessibility, more green space a shade pavilion and Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. Planning Director Mark Miller says rearrangement of the planters in the plaza is also possible.

“As the deck starts to get removed we do have the ability to change the orientation of those planters. They don’t have to fall exactly as they are today in the next iteration because the whole thing is basically being removed.”

Downtown Development Authority member Greg McNeilly also thinks adding a food or retail outlet along the west wall might work.

“Whether it is a food option or pop up retail, it is such a wide space and it is just a wall.”

The deck replacement is expected to start in the spring of next year and take about 9 months to complete.
